I'd encourage users of 'industry-defined specifications' to update to the 'new SWOP' specs.
Remember also that "W" in SWOP stands for 'Web'. IMHO, the IDEAlliance G7 spec is better for offset sheetfed. FOGRA39 is also very close.
The IDEAlliance ISO Digital Control Strip is an excellent tool to quickly determine if proofs are accurate and consistent. I believe it was developed jointly by FOGRA and IDEAlliance. It's a free download from www.gracol.org.
the 3 options are weel explained however working to a standard in my experiance has pushed the quality of proofing / press up in terms of colour contrast and definition. Particularly the isocoated v2 standard has seen some good results and www.eci.org I would consider a first stop particularly for europeans
